Weary Vessels
“We are officially wiped . . . but God has never been intimidated by our weakness, rather He relishes in the opportunity to breathe through weary vessels. And, as though there was ever any question, it is clear that anything of power that was left behind is of God and not of man.”—Louie Giglio
Michael turned in all our edits for Real Men Don’t Text! We’re finished.
The book started as a blog post and last February Michael surprised me with a night away to talk “what ifs”. What if we wrote this book? What would it look like? Who would the audience be? What if we started writing?
It’s funny because the first person that suggested Michael and I write a relationship book together, I turned up my nose and said, “Oh there are already too many relationship books.” She insisted we needed to write about dating in the digital world.
Here we are more than a year later—a year with moments of elation and times where we wondered how we’d ever pull this off—finished.
Exhausted.
Last Friday, I started panicking about the book. “What if it doesn’t sell? What if the low sales mean we can never write again? What should we do?” I asked Michael. It’s so easy to let worry consume our thoughts and steal our joy, isn’t it? It’s sobering to remember we’re really in control of so little.
When my hands get sticky from gripping my future too tightly, I force myself to pause and remember that control is an illusion and we really aren’t all that important. And action must accompany this pause.
So after Michael and I finished writing, we went downtown for a big celebration, slept in, took a day off work, sat in a coffee shop without discussing the book, walked aimlessly around the mall, drank way too much coffee, and enjoyed an entire 24-hours of celebration together. I didn’t blog this week or come up with ten ways to promote the book, because it was my way of saying, “God you are in control, not me. This is your book, not ours.”
I’m exhausted, I’m weak—but praise be to our great God who says that when we are weak, He is always strong (2 Corinthians 12).
May you remember this truth as you celebrate the resurrection this weekend. He is Risen, indeed.
